A lane had to be closed on Interstate 5 southbound in Tacoma while troopers tried to detain a 14-year-old girl Tuesday.

State Patrol dispatch received a call from a mother of a teenager. The teenager was reportedly yelling in the background as they were arguing over a recent disposition in her court case from Pierce County Juvenile Court. During the call, the parents had to pull their vehicle over to the right shoulder near South 72nd Street and South 74th Street, Washington State Patrol trooper Kameron Watts told The News Tribune.

The teenager left the vehicle with her father’s phone as she tried to contact her probation officer, Watts said. When State Patrol arrived, the teen tried to leave, and she had to be detained by troopers.

Watts said she was assaulting officers. She spit on three of them and kicked one. She also damaged one of the troopers’ body cameras. No troopers were injured.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of three counts of third-degree assault and will be in custody at the Remann Hall juvenile detention center.

The police activity caused the right lane to be closed for nearly an hour. The lane re-opened about 12:43 p.m.
