30-minute delays expected over this Pierce County bridge due to asphalt repair

State Route 302 drivers can expect delays this morning.

According to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation, one lane will shut down from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday approaching the Purdy Bridge.

There will be one-way, alternating traffic east of the Purdy Bridge approaching Tyee Drive Northwest, the release said. There will be traffic stops of up to 30 minutes in each direction.

“The lane reduction creates a work zone for Washington State Department of Transportation crews to repair the asphalt at the bridge’s east approach,” the release said. “...WSDOT recognizes that travel will be challenging on SR 302 between the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor during repairs. The emergent work is being performed after the morning commute and as soon as materials are available.”

WSDOT urged drivers to add 30 minutes of extra travel time to their commutes, travel on a full tank of gas and avoid the area during the schedule delays if possible.

The bridge was built in 1936, the release said, with the span being rebuilt in 1966.

“Approximately 24,000 vehicles use the bridge each day,” the release said.
