Overnight lane closures are coming to northbound Interstate 5 at Port of Tacoma Road later this month.

According to an alert from the City of Fife, road closures will take effect from 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 and Saturday, July 18, then be lifted at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 12 and Sunday, July 19.

Northbound Interstate 5 lanes will start closing at 7 p.m. on both Saturdays, the city said, “starting with the far-left HOV lane and progressing sequentially from left to right.”

All lanes on northbound Interstate 5 will be fully closed by 11 p.m., and 8 a.m. is when lanes will start reopening, starting with the far-right lane. All lanes will be fully re-open by 12 p.m. on both Sundays.

The Port of Tacoma Road bridge over Interstate 5 will be closed in both directions, the release said, and exit 136B on northbound Interstate 5 to Port of Tacoma Road will be closed. Exit 136A to Port of Tacoma Road will be open.

Drivers will take a detour through 20th Street East and Pacific Highway East, the release said.

These closures are happening because of construction during the Port of Tacoma Road Phase 2A Project, which will construct a new bridge over Interstate 5 and revamp the Port of Tacoma Road and 24th Avenue East interchanges to carry more cars.

Construction will happen in eight stages, with this being part of the first stage. The project will cost $64.6 million, and construction is expected to wrap up in July 2029.

“Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted detour signs, and allow extra travel time during the overnight closure,” the city said in the release. “If weather conditions delay work, closures may be rescheduled.”
