Lane closures on Interstate 5 in the DuPont and Steilacoom area will take place this weekend.

According to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation, drivers should be aware of the following changes:

  • Southbound I-5 ramp closures in DuPont will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday, July 10 to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13.
  • The southbound I-5 exit to Steilacoom-DuPont Road will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday, July 10 to 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11.
  • The southbound I-5 exit to Center Drive will be closed from 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 12 to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13.

Signed detours will be in place, the release said, and southbound Interstate 5 approaching the work zone will have three lanes open from 9 p.m. on Friday, July 10 to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13. The HOV lane will be open to everyone.

These closures will allow workers to install lighting and guardrails, pave and stripe the ramps in connection to the I-5 Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road Corridor Improvements Project.

The project costs $245 million and is part of a series of projects that aims to widen I-5.

Previous improvements include:

  • Rebuilding the Berkeley Street and Thorne Lane interchanges to improve pedestrian access.
  • Adding new HOV lanes and auxiliary lanes in both directions of I-5.

Both directions of I-5 will have HOV lanes between Mounts Road and Gravelly Lake Drive after the project is wrapped up, according to WSDOT.

Crews opened a new Steilacoom-DuPont Road interchange on March 22, the release said.

“The new bridge eliminates an at-grade railroad intersection and includes a barrier-protected shared-use path connecting JBLM to DuPont,” the release said.

Crews expect to complete the project in late 2026, the release said.

The lane closures scheduled for this weekend could be rescheduled if it rains, WSDOT said.
