Lane restrictions, realignment slated for I-5 through Tacoma
Crews will restrict traffic on northbound Interstate 5 through Tacoma on Friday night and into Saturday morning so they can realign lanes as part of the construction project between South M Street and Fife.
Restrictions will begin at 9 p.m. Friday (April 1) with as many as three northbound lanes closed at times.
All lanes are to reopen Saturday, but the I-5 alignment north of the Puyallup River bridge will be different than it has been.
The state Department of Transportation said contract crews will re-stripe the northbound lanes, shifting them toward the center median onto a newly paved area.
“Realigning the lanes will create a new work zone as crews build new HOV lanes on northbound I-5 as well as a new bridge over the Puyallup River,” the agency said Thursday in a news release.
The Transportation Department urged motorists to pay extra attention when traveling through the area.
