Exit to westbound Route 16 from southbound I-5 to close overnight this week
Nighttime drivers on southbound Interstate 5 will have to take a detour to get to westbound state Route 16 or South 38th Street in Tacoma this week.
Crews will close those two exits Monday (May 9) through Thursday at 10 p.m. The exits will reopen the next day at 6 a.m.
Motorists will detour via the I-5/South 56th Street interchange.
The Washington State Department of Transportation reported last week the closures will allow contractors to continue replacing the surface of I-5 near Pacific Avenue.
Other lane and ramp closures will occur throughout the construction zone, which stretches from about South M Street to Fife.
Lane closures
▪ Monday (May 9) and Tuesday: Southbound lanes of I-5 will be routed onto I-705 near the Tacoma Dome, and drivers will be returned to I-5 farther south. The closure begins at 11:59 p.m. both days with the I-5 mainline reopening the following day at 4 a.m.
▪ Wednesday and Thursday: Northbound lanes of I-5 near South 38th Street will be routed onto the northbound collector-distributor and detoured via either state Route 7 or I-705. The shift begins at 11:59 p.m. both days with the I-5 mainline reopening the following morning at 4 a.m.
Ramp closures
▪ Monday (May 9) through Thursday: The on-ramp to northbound I-5 from East 28th Street will close each day at 8:30 p.m. and reopen the following morning at 4 a.m.
▪ Friday: The exit from the northbound I-5 collector-distributor to northbound I-705 will closed at 11:59 p.m. and reopen Saturday at 5 a.m.; the on-ramp to northbound I-5 from East 28th Street will close at 10 p.m. and reopen at 7 a.m. Saturday.
