Oregon coast rattled by 3.9-magnitude earthquake, USGS says

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake happened off the coast of Oregon early Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit the coast at 5:28 a.m. Pacific time, according to the USGS. It occurred 279 miles from Bandon and 287 miles from Coos Bay, according to KGW8.

The quake had a depth of around 6 miles, according to USGS.

There were also several smaller quakes in California on Monday morning. A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Lone Pine, California, and 2.9-magnitude quake happened near Lucerne Valley, California.

Magnitude measures energy released during an earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey says. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Earthquakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude are “often felt, but only causes minor damage,” according to Michigan Tech.
