A stolen gun that’s been missing since 1997 has been recovered in Washington, police said.

The discovery of the handgun came after a man showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg Wednesday night, the Seattle Police Department said in a Thursday news release.

An unidentified man was playing with the gun while he and a friend were putting gas in their car, the friend told police. He then shot himself by accident, police said.

The injured man told police he was shot by people who were trying to sell him drugs, but his friend told officers the gun was in the car, where they retrieved it, the release said.

The investigation is ongoing.
