Teen dies days after fellow student ambushes him at school bus stop, Georgia cops say
A 16-year-old student ambushed in a shooting as he waited at a school bus stop has died from his injuries, police in Gwinnett County, Georgia confirmed to McClatchy News.
Timothy Barnes Jr. was a sophomore at Central Gwinnett High School in Lawrenceville, about 32 miles northwest of Atlanta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, citing police. Barnes was shot in the head just before 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 2 as he waited for his bus to arrive.
A 17-year-old, who police said shot Barnes and is a fellow student, was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, McClatchy News previously reported. He now faces an additional charge of malice murder, Lawrenceville police spokesman Lt. Jake Parker said Nov. 4.
McClatchy News is choosing not to name the 17-year-old because he’s a minor.
Barnes was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting, police said. His mother, Latoya Nicholson, told WXIA that the violent attack left her son brain dead.
“He’s on life support, but they’re doing everything they can do,” Nicholson told the news station at the time.
Authorities are still investigating but said the shooting may have stemmed from a previous dispute between Barnes and the 17-year-old, according to the AJC.
The accused shooter was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail, where he remained held without bond as of the afternoon of Nov. 4, jail records show.
McClatchy News reached out to Gwinnett County Schools on Nov. 4 and is awaiting a response.
