71-year-old’s arm ‘almost amputated’ after dog attack in South Carolina, officials say
A woman’s arm was “almost amputated” after a dog attacked her in South Carolina, officials said.
The 71-year-old was flown to a hospital with serious injuries on Saturday, Nov. 13, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue.
Officials said the Walterboro woman was found in the yard of her home along Rivers Street, roughly 50 miles west of Charleston.
The woman was critically hurt, with one arm nearly amputated, rescuers said in a news release. As a first responder tried to stop the bleeding, officials prepared to take her away from the scene.
Though the woman stopped breathing at one point, crews got her breathing again before she went into a helicopter bound for Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, according to the news release.
The Walterboro Police Department and animal control officials were also involved in the case, officials said.
An officer responded to an “active dog attack” at about 12:30 p.m. and found the woman “lying face down in the back yard with several extremely severe dog bites / injuries to both forearms,” police said in an incident report.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information on Nov. 16.
