A child was shot after a fight between his mother and father in Arizona, police reported.

The boy’s 53-year-old father got into a physical fight with the boy’s mother at a custody exchange Sunday, March 27, police said in a news release. The mother escaped and ran to some neighbors.

Onlookers then heard several gunshots inside the house, police said. Officers found the boy inside with serious gunshot wounds and his father dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot, the release said. A gun was found next to his body.

The boy, who local news outlets report is 6 years old, was taken to a hospital, where he is expected to survive, police said. An investigation into the case continues.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this story identified the child’s father. His name has since been removed to protect the identity of surviving family members.
