72-year-old woman dies weeks after man punched her for interrupting fight, CA cops say
Last August, Barbara Scott came upon a man and a woman arguing in an alley in Long Beach. Scott, 72, went to intervene, the Long Beach Police Department said.
The man punched Scott, knocking her down. Twenty-six days later, Scott died as a result of that punch.
Police arrested 19-year-old Lawrence Jackson on Wednesday, July 6, and charged him with Scott’s murder.
On that August day, Jackson and the woman didn’t wait around for police to arrive, according to police.
Officers arrived to find Scott being treated by paramedics, police said. Scott, though, refused further medical treatment and went back home.
Hours later, police returned to find she was unconscious, police said. Scott was transported to a local hospital.
For weeks, the cops heard nothing of Scott. But on Sept. 16, they got a call informing them that she had died in her nursing home.
Scott’s cause of death was a result of blunt head trauma, according to a Los Angeles’ County coroner’s report.
Officers arrested Jackson during a traffic stop, police said. He was being held on $2 million bail.
