Firetruck crashes on way to blaze, killing 1 and injuring 4, Tennessee officials say

A firefighter died and four people were injured in a wreck involving a firetruck on its way to a fire on Aug. 10, Tennessee officials say.
Memphis Police Department officers say they received a call about a crash involving a truck and a Memphis Fire Department engine around 8:19 p.m. Five individuals, including four firefighters, were taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to a Memphis Fire Department statement.
The fire engine’s driver, David Pleasant, died as a result of his injuries, Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat said in a statement. The other three firefighters were released from the hospital.
“Last night was a somber reminder of the daily dangers our Fire and EMS personnel face as they serve the Memphis community,” Sweat said. “David was extremely passionate about his role as a driver for the Memphis Fire Department, and he loved to help people and serve our community.”
The crash occurred at E.H. Crump Boulevard and Danny Thomas Place, police said. The fire engine was responding to an 8:10 p.m. call about a residential fire at the time of the accident, the fire department said in a statement.
Police say their investigation is ongoing.
