Intruder killed in gunfight at an apartment complex, California police say

An early-morning shootout left an intruder dead and a resident hurt at a Riverside apartment complex, California police told news outlets.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots at the complex in the 5900 block of Sycamore Canyon Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, KNBC reported.

A resident told police he grabbed a gun and opened fire when several men broke into his apartment, police told KCBS. At least one intruder returned fire, hitting him.

One of the intruders and the injured resident were found at the complex and taken to a hospital, where the intruder died, police told KABC.

The resident, who was shot in the lower body, is expected to survive, police told the station. At least one intruder escaped.

Riverside is a city of 315,000 people near San Bernardino about 55 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
