Woman fatally shoots pro bull rider in argument after visiting fair, Utah officials say
A woman shot and killed a professional bull rider after the pair were in an argument, Utah officials said.
Officers found Demetrius Omar Lateef Allen, known professionally as Ouncie Mitchell, with “at least one gunshot wound” outside an apartment complex in Salt Lake City just after midnight on Monday, Sept. 12, Salt Lake City Police said in a news release.
The 27-year-old was taken to a hospital where he died, according to police.
Professional Bull Riders Commissioner Sean Gleason took to Facebook to share the organization’s shock and grief.
“Ouncie was a talented cowboy and a familiar face on the Velocity Tour,” Gleason said. “Ouncie got his name because he was born small. He grew up to compete with a huge heart.”
After finding Allen, officers “saw multiple bullet holes coming from an apartment,” police said, and took LaShawn Denise Bagley, 21, into custody.
Allen came to the city to attend the Utah State Fair with Bagley, who he “had been in a relationship” with, according to police. He planned to stay at her apartment.
However, after going to the fair, the two got into an argument while in a bar downtown, police said. When Allen went to get his things from her apartment, “shots were fired.”
Bagley was booked into jail on “charges of murder and felony discharge of a firearm,” according to police.
Allen, originally from Fresno, Texas, was ranked No. 157 among bull riders in the world at the time of his death, according to the Professional Bull Riders Tour website.
Allen won the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo in 2021, according to Professional Bull Riders.
