A teacher is accused of bringing alcohol on campus and teaching students while intoxicated, California police said.

Deputies responded to a call about an intoxicated teacher at a school on Avenue 66 in Thermal shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

“School officials contacted the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department after discovering one of their teachers appeared to be under the influence of alcohol,” the sheriff’s department said.

The 44-year-old, “who was under the influence of alcohol while instructing children,” was arrested, the sheriff’s department said.

The Palm Springs resident was booked into jail on counts of “public intoxication, possession of alcohol on school grounds, and child endangerment,” the sheriff’s department said.

Thermal is about 140 miles northeast of San Diego.
