A man accused of fleeing police in a stolen Mustang died when he ran out of gas on the San Mateo Bridge, got out and was run over, California police reported.

A Half Moon Bay homeowner called 911 to report a home invasion, burglary and theft of a white 2020 Ford Mustang early Wednesday, Sept. 21, California Highway Patrol officers told KTVU.

San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies began chasing the Mustang on various highways in the San Francisco Bay Area about 4 a.m., police told KPIX.

San Mateo police, who picked up the pursuit, broke off the chase after losing sight of the Mustang on Highway 92 just before the bridge, the California Highway Patrol reported on Twitter.

A few minutes later, 911 calls reported a pedestrian had been hit on the bridge.

The Mustang apparently “ran out of gas” on the bridge, the CHP reported. The driver got out “to continue on foot” but was hit and killed by a passing vehicle. His identity has not been released.

The bridge, which crosses San Francisco Bay, reopened to all traffic a few hours later.
