A 17-year-old was shot dead on the basketball court of an Atlanta-area subdivision, Georgia authorities say. Now police are asking for the public’s help to find his killer.

Officers arrived at Mariray Court in Lawrenceville around 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, to find a teenager dead from a gunshot wound on the neighborhood’s basketball court, according to Gwinnett County police.

Authorities identified him Monday as Timothy Buchanan, 17, of Lawrenceville.

“They were just kids and playing basketball. We didn’t think they were packing,” a neighbor told WSB-TV. “My kids are over there in the house right now because I don’t want them anywhere near any of this.”

Police are working to identify a motive and no arrests have been made as of Monday, Oct. 3. Additional details weren’t immediately available.

The shooting comes just weeks after a 13-year-old boy was found shot and killed in the woods in Lithonia, WXIA reported. Jamiren Crosby was missing for days before someone found his body behind a town home on Sept. 19.

Anyone with information on the Lawrenceville shooting is asked to call Gwinnett County police detectives at 770-513-5300, or contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) to submit an anonymous tip.

Lawrenceville is about 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
