Mysterious human remains found in popular location of Maine’s Acadia National Park

Human remains were found in Maine’s Acadia National Park, park rangers said.

National Park Service rangers told News Center Maine that human remains were found within the park last week, the news outlet reported on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Park officials didn’t know how long the human remains had been in the park when they were discovered, Bangor Daily News reported. The remains have not been identified.

Officials told WMTW the remains were found near the Fabbri Picnic Area, which is part of Park Loop Road on Otter Point. The area is also near Thunder Hole, a popular tourist attraction.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit also responded to the incident. Officials told news outlets the case is not criminal and is under investigation by the National Park Service.

Over 4 million people visited Acadia National Park in 2021, according to the National Park Service. The park is among the most popular sites in the National Park System.

Acadia is known for its colorful fall foliage during October. During that time, the park sees a flock of visitors looking to see the bright colors.

“Each fall, Acadia’s forests burst with color,” the National Park Service said. “As temperatures cool, the trees brighten with yellows, reds, and oranges.”
