71-year-old dies trying to stop pickup truck rolling backward on NC driveway, cops say
A 71-year-old died after he tried to stop a pickup truck from rolling backward in a North Carolina driveway, officials said.
Marshall David Kestler was returning to his Davidson County home when he pulled into the driveway. He got out of a pickup truck before it started to roll, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol.
“Mr. Kestler attempted to ... re-enter the vehicle so that he could get it stopped,” Master Trooper Ned Moultrie told McClatchy News in a Nov. 3 phone interview. “And when he did so, he was struck by the vehicle and eventually the vehicle came to rest on top of him.”
Kestler died at the scene from crash-related injuries, officials said.
A trooper investigated the incident, which highway patrol officials responded to around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 31. It was reported outside Kestler’s home on Lake Drive 8, in the Lexington area roughly 30 miles south of Winston-Salem.
Officials said Kestler stopped the pickup in the driveway and got out before it started to roll backward. The vehicle made its way out of the driveway by the time it came to rest, according to Moultrie.
