A man who won $1 million on a Powerball ticket says he plans to use his winnings to treat his wife to a used car, Oregon lottery officials said.
Brooks Keebey, 82, bought $10 worth of Powerball tickets at TNT Hollywood Tavern in Salem “on a whim during the record jackpot run up,” Oregon Lottery said in a Wednesday, Nov. 16 news release.
When Keebey scanned the ticket he bought on Nov. 7 and “it told him to see customer service,” he “knew something was up,” the release said.
He soon learned he won $1 million, lottery officials said. He “matched all five numbers, missing only the Powerball.”
Though Keebey was just one number away from winning the record-breaking $2 billion Powerball jackpot, he told lottery officials he’s “not greedy.”
Keebey, who is “retired from driving fuel trucks,” plans to spend some of his winnings paying taxes and buying his wife a used Cadillac, lottery officials said.
He plans to tuck the rest away, saying “it will be wonderful to have the money for the remainder of his retirement,” lottery officials said.
