Woman’s face burned during NYC subway attack, cops say. Suspect arrested in Georgia
A 21-year-old woman’s face was severely burned when another woman threw an “unknown chemical” at her at a New York City subway station in December, according to authorities. Then, the suspect disappeared.
One month later, an arrest was made more than 800 miles south in connection with the “unprovoked attack” in Brooklyn. The attack left the woman with first- and second-degree burns on her face the morning of Dec. 2, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office announced Jan. 4.
The U.S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Rodlin Gravesande in Atlanta on Jan. 3 in connection with the incident, a news release from the office shared to Facebook on Jan. 4 said. The sheriff’s office’s SWAT unit also helped with the arrest.
Authorities said she was “taken into custody without incident” while visiting a home in Atlanta, according to the release. Officials did not specify whether Gravesande had an attorney as of Jan. 4.
The attack happened when the 21-year-old woman was at a subway station platform at Nostrand Avenue and Winthrop Street at about 1:10 a.m., an NYPD spokesperson confirmed in a statement to McClatchy News.
That was when a female suspect started an argument with the woman, according to the NYPD.
When the woman walked up the stairs, she was followed and “splashed” by an “unknown chemical substance,” police said.
The suspect ran away, and authorities began searching for her, according to the NYPD.
Afterward, the woman, with the left side of her face badly burned, was taken to a nearby hospital in “critical but stable condition,” the NYPD said.
The NYPD did not comment on or confirm Gravesande’s arrest in Georgia in connection with the incident in the statement to McClatchy News.
Gravesande is facing charges including assault with the intent to cause serious physical harm, FOX 5 reported.
