A high school basketball player has been put on life support after suffering a medical event during a game on Tuesday, Jan. 31, Michigan officials say.

Cartier Woods, a senior at Northwestern High School in Detroit, went into cardiac arrest during the game against Douglass High School, said Nikolai Vitti, superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

Woods was administered CPR and taken to Henry Ford Hospital, where he was put on life support, Vitti said in an statement shared by parents on Facebook and reported by WDIV.

“The next 24 hours are critical for his survival,” Vitti said.

It’s unclear what caused his heart to stop.
