A father is in critical condition after trying to save his family from a fatal house fire, Tennessee officials say.

Memphis firefighters said in a news release that they responded to a house fire just after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28. An unattended space heater in one of the home’s back bedrooms caught fire, setting the house ablaze.

Officials said four family members were killed in the fire, including an 8-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy, WHBQ reported. The boys’ 33-year-old mother and 62-year-old grandfather also died in the fire.

The boys’ dad arrived home while the house was burning and attempted to save his family, officials told WATN. The father tried to bust windows and get inside the house without success.

He is in critical condition at Regional One Hospital’s burn unit, officials said, according to the outlet.

The Memphis Fire Department did not immediately return McClatchy News’ request for comment.
