A 46-year-old Minnesota woman is dead after a large rock smashed through the windshield of her pickup truck, according to police.

The woman, later identified as Kay Spielman, was driving along State Highway 61 around 2 p.m. on May 5 when the rock struck the hood of her vehicle, went through the windshield and hit her, Two Harbors police said in a news release.

Officers arrived at the scene, “on the east edge” of Two Harbors, to find a group of people trying to get into the vehicle to help Spielman, police said during a May 9 news briefing.

Spielman was slumped over and bleeding, police said.

“Through the efforts of these citizens, emergency responders were able to quickly provide medical aid,” police Chief Chris Donald said.

She was taken to a hospital but died due to her injuries, Donald said.

“She was a mother, a sister, a daughter, and a very caring and giving person,” Donald said.

Investigators found the rock, which was the size of a softball, in the back seat of the truck, he said.

It’s not clear where the rock came from, but Donald dispelled rumors that it was intentionally thrown, calling the incident an “isolated and unfortunate event.”

He added that an investigation is underway.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Two Harbors Police Department at 218-834-5566.

Two Harbors is roughly 25 miles northeast of downtown Duluth.
