Historic estate owned by a Revolutionary War general lists in South Carolina. See it

A beautiful estate with a background connected to the Revolutionary War has landed on the real estate market in Winyah Bay, South Carolina, for $14.75 million.

The 7,910-square-foot main house sits on 957 acres and was built in the early 1800s, the listing on Top 10 Real Estate Deals says, and was the home of a man who fought in the American Revolution before turning to politics.

“Brigadier General Peter Horry was a South Carolina planter who joined Francis ‘Swamp Fox’ Marion in a campaign of guerilla warfare against British troops during the Revolutionary War,” the listing says. “He fought at the Battle of Fort Moultrie and commanded a light horse regiment at the Battle of Quinby Bridge. After the war, he retired to his spectacular plantation, Dover, and served in South Carolina’s Senate and House of Representatives.”

Unfortunately, the original home Horry lived in was destroyed by a fire. This is when Cornelia Sage, a reconstructor of historic estates, stepped in and later rebuilt it using other historic homes in 1949, the listing notes.

The estate, known as Dover, offers up many high-end features along with modern highlights like:

  • Expansive kitchen

  • Entertaining spaces

  • Built-in china cabinetry

  • Gun room

  • Wine cellar

  • Views

Other buildings on the property include:

  • Standalone office with a porch

  • Guest house

  • Theater

  • Fellowship hall

  • Three guest cottages

  • Horse barn

  • Sauna

  • Game room

Winyah Bay is about 35 miles south of Myrtle Beach.
