High school football player dies after ‘medical emergency’ on sideline, GA school says
A high school football player has died after suffering a medical emergency during a game, a Georgia school said.
The junior varsity player of the Windsor Forest High School football team “suffered a medical emergency on the sideline of a game” the evening of Oct. 2, the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools said in a news release.
The student had played earlier in the game but was watching from the sidelines when the incident occurred, the school said.
Trainers and emergency medical services performed CPR and used a defibrillator on the student, the school said in the statement. The student was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the student’s family and friends,” the school said in a statement.
The school has not released the name or age of the student.
“Counselors and school social workers will be on site at Windsor Forest High School today to provide counseling to any student or staff member who seeks to speak with someone,” the school said.
Windsor Forest High School in south Savannah has just under 1,000 students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
