A 4-year-old remains hospitalized after he was run over by a car in Georgia, deputies told news outlets.

The boy fell from his mother’s car Monday, March 11, then was struck by her vehicle near the Interstate 20 off-ramp in Grovetown, WRDW reported, citing the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the car was going through a diverging diamond, approaching I-20 east, when the rear driver’s side door opened and the boy fell onto the road, according to an incident report obtained by McClatchy News.

He was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries and placed in a pediatric intensive care unit, the sheriff’s office and WFXG reported.

The child’s condition wasn’t known as of Tuesday, March 12.

So far, no charges have been filed, deputies told WJBF. Authorities didn’t release additional details but said the investigation is ongoing.

Grovetown is about a 10-mile drive west from downtown Augusta.
