A 3-year-old and his mother were victims of a “random act of violence,” according to an Ohio mayor. Both were stabbed outside of a grocery store on June 3, killing the toddler and injuring the mother, local news outlets reported.

North Olmsted Police said they received “multiple 911 calls” that afternoon about a stabbing in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle grocery store.

When they arrived, officers arrested a 32-year-old after people at the scene described the suspect, according to a news release.

The toddler and his mother were rushed to a hospital, North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones said in a statement.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office later said the 3-year-old boy died, WKYC reported.

“Our hearts go out to the two victims of what appears to be a random act of violence,” Jones said.

Bionca Ellis was charged with aggravated murder and is expected to be arraigned on June 4, Fox 8 reported.

North Olmsted is about a 20-mile drive southwest of Cleveland.
