Blood trail leads to dismembered body in home and knife-wielding man, Florida cops say
A man carrying a dismembered body part was fatally shot by police when he refused to drop a large knife gripped in the other hand, according to investigators in southwest Florida.
Willy Lumaine, 33, is believed to have killed his roommate minutes earlier and was in the process of dismembering the body when police arrived, the Fort Myers Police Department reported in June 10 news release. Fort Myers is about a 130-mile drive south from Tampa.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, and the witnesses included his terrified wife and two small children, police said. The woman, found cowering in the home’s carport, told officers Lumaine was inside “actively killing their roommate.”
“They observed an open door and a blood trail. Due to the blood trail, officers established a perimeter around the residence and began giving verbal commands in an attempt to locate the husband and any possible victims,” police said in the news release.
“An adult male ... approached a rear window and began to smash it out with a large knife. As officers were giving verbal commands for the male to drop the knife, he climbed out of the window holding the knife in one hand and what appeared to be a dismembered body part in the other.”
Lumaine then began walking toward the officers, who commanded him to drop the knife, officials said.
He was stopped when officers fired their weapons, “incapacitating him,” officials said. He died at the scene.
“During the course of the investigation, it was evident that a violent attack had occurred inside the residence,” police said.
“Officers discovered the roommate’s mutilated and dismembered body inside and outside of the residence. No other victims were located.”
The identity of the roommate has not been released and investigators have not revealed Lumaine’s motive.
An investigation into the use of deadly force by officers is being handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard procedure.
The officers involved have been “placed on paid administrative leave” pending the outcome of the investigation.
