Curious pup ignites early-morning kitchen fire as owners sleep, Colorado video shows
An inquisitive pup’s early-morning kitchen misadventure nearly ended in disaster for a Colorado Springs family, Colorado firefighters reported.
Home security video posted to Facebook on July 2 by the Colorado Springs Fire Department shows the dog investigating the stovetop in the kitchen before dawn.
In the course of its inspection, the dog accidentally turns on a burner before wandering off, the video shows.
A glow immediately brightens beneath one of several cardboard boxes on the stovetop, the video shows.
The video then changes perspective and shows the cardboard boxes burning. The flames spread to the cabinets above the stove, the video shows.
Firefighters responded to a 911 call from residents at 4:43 a.m. June 26, but one of the residents had already extinguished the blaze, the agency said on Facebook.
A high heat alert on their Apple HomePod woke up the residents, firefighters said.
The man who extinguished the blaze was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, firefighters said. No other injuries were reported.
Firefighters investigating the cause of the fire discovered the dog’s involvement on the home’s security video.
“This is a good reminder to always have working smoke alarms inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor of the home, ensure all combustibles are away from your stovetop/oven, and know two ways out of every room in your home in the event of a fire,” firefighters said.
Colorado Springs is about a 70-mile drive south from Denver.
