Train barrels into impromptu photoshoot, killing man and injuring 2, Arkansas cops say
A man is dead and two others are injured after they were hit by a train while taking photos, Arkansas police said.
A group of three, a man and two women, were walking by train tracks when they decided to take photos on a rail bridge near a local park at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday, July 21, the Van Buren Police Department told McClatchy News in a statement.
According to police, a train had just passed and the trio thought they had time to go on the bridge before another train came. But as they were snapping pictures, a second train arrived, and they didn’t have time to get to safety.
All three were struck by the train, police said. While both women survived with non-life-threatening injuries, the man was killed, police said, adding that his body was recovered from the water below, where he was thrown by the impact.
Police didn’t publicly identify the man, but said he was a 59-year-old resident from the neighboring town of Rudy.
Van Buren, which sits near Arkansas’ border with Oklahoma, is a roughly 7-mile drive northeast from downtown Fort Smith.
A toxicology report has been requested and an investigation is underway, according to police.
