11-year-old is fatally shot during argument, Florida cops say. 14-year-old charged
A 14-year-old boy wanted in the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old acquaintance has been jailed after three days on the run, according to investigators in Florida.
The suspect turned himself in Monday, Aug. 12, and was charged with manslaughter in the killing of Veondre Hargrove, the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a news release.
Hargrove died around 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at a home on 11th Avenue South in St. Petersburg, about a 23-mile drive southwest from Tampa.
“Detectives learned that Hargrove had gone to the home to visit a friend when (the suspect) arrived sometime later,” police said.
“Shortly after, an argument ensued leaving Hargrove dead from a single gunshot wound. (The suspect) fled on foot. ... Officers located Hargrove dead inside the home.”
The boys were in the living room, waiting on their mutual friend to come home, when the shooting occurred, WFLA reports. An adult was also in the home, but was sleeping until she awoke “to a loud noise, and her son — the mutual friend — screaming,” the station reported.
Investigators are still trying to determine where the gun came from, WTVT reports.
