A 4-year-old was fatally shot when four young kids were left home alone at a St. Louis residence, Missouri police said.

Another child in the home called 911, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department told KTVI. When officers arrived around midnight on Sept. 3, the 4-year-old was “barely breathing,” according to a Facebook post from police.

Officers weren’t able to wait for an ambulance and said they gave the child life-saving care in a patrol vehicle on the way to a hospital.

The 4-year-old died at the hospital, according to police.

Police said no adults were present at the time of the shooting, and the four children in the home were under age 10.

Investigators are determining if the shooting was accidental, according to KSDK. According to KTVI, officers believe one of the children found a gun and accidentally fired a shot at the 4-year-old girl.

The name of the child was not released.
