67-year-old tourist killed in motorcycle crash on Blue Ridge Parkway, rangers say
A 67-year-old tourist was killed in a motorcycle crash along the Blue Ridge Parkway, rangers said.
The man was riding along the mountainous road in North Carolina when he veered into oncoming traffic. A group of riders reported the crash at about 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, according to the National Park Service.
The rider was identified in a news release as Albertaus Peek of Bodegraven, Netherlands. He died at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Peek was traveling southbound with a group of riders when he failed to navigate a turn, left the lane, and hit a vehicle traveling northbound,” the park service said. “The driver of the northbound vehicle sustained minor injuries.”
The crash was reported near mile marker 377, about 7 miles north of the Asheville Visitor Center.
The Blue Ridge Parkway spans 469 miles across the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. The road is known for its scenery and is a popular place to view fall foliage.
