A man told authorities he spent two days trapped in a Massachusetts marsh before being rescued, news outlets reported.

Officers and firefighters rescued the 41-year-old man from a marsh in Bourne after someone reported hearing cries for help at 1:27 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, police said in a news release.

He was found in thick brush in a part of the marsh not normally traveled, police said. He was taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

The man said he had been stuck in the marsh for two days, firefighters told WBTS.

“He could not make it out of the marsh,” Joseph Carrara, an interim assistant fire chief, told the station. “He didn’t have any shoes on, so that contributed to him being able to move around in that thick brush and the thorns within that area.”

The man was found stuck in mud, WCVB reported.

Bourne is about a 60-mile drive south from Boston.
