A 19-year-old man pulled out a firearm in a dispute with two other people and wound up accidentally shooting himself, California sheriff’s officials reported.

Deputies responding to a report of gunfire in Camarillo at about 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, found Angel Barajas with a gunshot wound to his lower torso, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a Wednesday, Sept. 11, news release.

Family members of one of the others in the dispute intervened to stop Barajas from firing the firearm at anyone when he accidentally shot it, hitting himself, deputies said.

Barajas was hospitalized, and a search of his home found evidence he illegally possessed the firearm, deputies said.

On his release from the hospital Tuesday, Sept. 10, deputies arrested Barajas on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a firearm and unlawful firearm transfer.

An investigation into the incident continues. Detectives ask anyone with information to call 805-388-5192.

Camarillo is about a 50-mile drive west from Los Angeles.
