A loyal California lottery player didn’t let the comments of naysayers deter her.

“People would always say, ‘I don’t know why you keep playing. You’re not going to win anything,’” Annette Lopez said, according to a Sept. 19 California Lottery news release.

Pushing the skeptical comments aside, Lopez spent $10 on a Power 10’s scratch-off ticket while she was shopping at a Merced grocery store in May, she told lottery officials.

“It was special because not only was it my sister’s birthday, but it was also Mother’s Day weekend,” Lopez said in the release. “I went to the store to get stuff for Mother’s Day and decided to play.”

Upon scratching her ticket, Lopez wasn’t sure it was a winner.

“I had to get my glasses,” she said. “When I looked at it again, I started tripping out.”

Lopez won $1 million, according to lottery officials.

“It was the best Mother’s Day,” she said.

And as for those naysayers?

“Now they know it’s possible,” Lopez told lottery officials.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
