Mom, teen hit by Navy parachutist at airshow, California officials say. ‘Unexpected’

A U.S. Navy parachutist accidentally landed on two spectators at a Fleet Week airshow in San Francisco, California firefighters told news outlets.

One of six parachutists from the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs Parachute Team hit a mom and teenager at Marina Green at about 12:35 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, firefighters told KTVU.

The mother and daughter suffered minor injuries, firefighters told KRON.

The parachutist was unhurt, KTVU reported.

“Our thoughts are with the individual and their family. Safety is our number one priority,” the U.S. Navy in a statement to KNTV. “We cannot immediately assess what happened; however, we will review this incident to determine the cause.”

The parachutist appeared to miss the landing zone and come down in the crowd, according to KGO.

“Everybody was like, ‘Whoa, what just happened?’ It was unexpected,” spectator Monette Rockymore told the station.

An airshow scheduled Saturday, Oct. 12, with the Blue Angels was canceled because of fog, SFGate reported.
