A 59-year-old man fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and injured her adult son just hours after she had obtained a restraining order against him, Los Angeles sheriff’s officials reported.

The man broke into their Bellflower apartment and shot the 26-year-old son in the hip in his bedroom at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

As the son ran out of the apartment, he heard his mother scream and a gunshot, deputies said. He called 911.

Deputies arriving at the complex heard a single gunshot inside the apartment as they contacted the injured 26-year-old, officials said.

They entered the home and found the bodies of the ex-boyfriend, who had died by suicide, and the 54-year-old woman, deputies said.

The son was taken to a hospital in stable condition, deputies said.

The woman had filed a restraining order protecting her and her son against the ex-boyfriend earlier Tuesday at the Whittier courthouse, deputies said.

Investigators ask anyone with information to call 323-890-5500.

Bellflower is about a 20-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.
