A man had dismembered human remains inside his car when detectives located him during the search for a missing 31-year-old Delaware woman, authorities said.

Nobert Matara, 32, was immediately arrested Dec. 21 in Maryland in connection with the disappearance of Tracy Nyariki, the New Castle County, Delaware, Police Department said in a Dec. 23 news release.

Matara is charged with first-degree murder, according to police.

Information regarding his legal representation wasn’t immediately available.

In Delaware on the night of Dec. 20, officers were sent to Nyariki’s New Castle County apartment after her employer reported she hadn’t come to work for multiple days, according to police.

Her employer was concerned, police said.

The officers didn’t find Nyariki inside her apartment, according to police.

Instead, they “uncovered several suspicious circumstances that raised concerns about her safety and well-being,” police said.

Authorities didn’t specify what the suspicious circumstances were.

After officers couldn’t locate or get into contact with Nyariki, they issued a Gold Alert, according to police.

In Delaware, Gold Alerts are sent out for “a missing person who is a senior citizen, a suicidal person, or a person with a disability,” according to the city of Wilmington.

By Dec. 21, Matara was a potential person of interest in the investigation, police said.

That’s when New Castle County detectives asked the Aberdeen Police Department in Maryland for help in finding Nyariki, Matara and Matara’s car, authorities said.

Matara was found inside his vehicle that day, with the dismembered remains, in Aberdeen and was arrested, according to police.

Before announcing Matara’s arrest, New Castle County police issued a news release Dec. 22, saying the Gold Alert for Nyariki was canceled and that she was found.

Authorities didn’t specify whether the remains in Matara’s car were identified as Nyariki.

The New Castle County Police Department didn’t have further information to provide when contacted by McClatchy News Dec. 23.

Matara will be extradited from Maryland to Delaware for an arraignment, according to police.

“Additional charges may be filed against Nobert Matara as evidence continues to be collected in this ongoing investigation,” police said.

New Castle County, Delaware, is about a 35-mile drive northeast from Aberdeen, Maryland.
