A shimmery deep-sea creature measuring almost 5 feet mysteriously washed ashore on an Oregon beach.
Now, researchers get a chance to learn more about the lancetfish.
The big-eyed fish with sharp fanged teeth was discovered Tuesday, April 22, on Seaside Beach, the Seaside Aquarium said in a Facebook post.
These fish typically live in tropical and subtropical waters and are found feeding in Alaska’s Bering Sea, according to the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.
Then every once in a while, a fish ends up on an Oregon beach in the spring or summer, the aquarium said.
Not a lot is known about lancetfish, but researchers said they live in the twilight zone, about 1 mile below the ocean’s surface.
“We also know that they are not picky eaters,” the aquarium said.
The aquarium said they eat more than 90 species of marine life.
And with their poor digestion, researchers can study what they have eaten from the contents of their stomach.
This research helps scientist understand how marine food webs change over time or how they are impacted by the climate, the aquarium said.
Seaside Beach is in northwestern Oregon.
