A Maryland man says he “didn’t trust what I was seeing” on a $50,000 Cash lottery ticket, so he passed it to his wife to confirm it, lottery officials said.

The Sharpsburg man recalled that his hands were shaking as he did so, lottery officials said in a Friday, May 16, news release.

“It was joy, of course, but also nerves. And lots and lots of laughter,” the man said. His wife confirmed he had just won the $50,000 grand prize in the scratch-off game.

But it almost didn’t happen.

“I would have gone right by the store,” he said, until he saw a banner celebrating an earlier lottery prize won by a customer at Hub City Liquors in Hagerstown.

He plans to save and invest his winnings.

Hagerstown is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.
