How many times has Trump been nominated for the Nobel prize? Here’s what to know
In the world of prestigious awards, some names are synonymous with near misses. Rapper Snoop Dogg has been put forward 16 times for a Grammy but never won, and actress Glenn Close has received eight Oscar nods, yet she remains empty-handed.
President Donald Trump can be counted among them. Over the years, he has repeatedly been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize — a highly sought-after distinction garnered by four U.S. presidents — but it continues to elude him.
“I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do, including Russia/Ukraine, and Israel/Iran, whatever those outcomes may be,” he lamented on Truth Social on June 20. “But the people know, and that’s all that matters to me!”
So, just how many times has Trump been nominated for the prestigious award?
The Nobel Committee, composed of five members appointed by the Norwegian parliament, does not disclose its nominations — which can be made by lawmakers, professors and other qualified nominators — until 50 years after they’re submitted.
But, according to an analysis of media reports and publicly available information, Trump has now been formally tapped for the prize at least 12 times, including most recently by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Individuals from six other countries, including Australia, Pakistan and Norway, have also put forward his name.
Here is a list of all his nominations.
2018
One of Trump’s first nominations came early during his first term in office. Two Norwegian lawmakers tapped him for the prize in recognition of a denuclearization effort between the U.S. and North Korea, according to The Hill.
The same year, 18 House Republicans nominated the president for the Nobel Peace Prize for his push to curtail North Korea’s nuclear program.
“Since taking office, President Trump has worked tirelessly to apply maximum pressure on North Korea to end its illicit weapons program and bring peace to the region,” a letter by the lawmakers said, according to The Hill.
2020
Two years later, the Republican president garnered a flurry of nominations.
Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a Norwegian politician, put forward Trump’s name to reward his peace efforts in the Middle East, according to the Associated Press.
Magnus Jacobsson, a Swedish lawmaker, also nominated Trump for the same reason, earning him a phone call from the president, who expressed his appreciation, according to the outlet.
Around the same time, a group of Australian law professors formally tapped Trump for the peace prize. Professor David Flint praised the “Trump Doctrine,” telling Sky News Australia, “he has decided he would no longer have America in endless wars …”
That wasn’t all. Laura Huhtasaari, a Finnish lawmaker and member of the European Parliament, nominated the U.S. president for the prize.
“President Trump has served almost a complete presidential term without starting a new war,” she wrote in a letter posted to social media site X.
2024
In the lead-up to and throughout his second term in office, Trump has received at least six additional nominations — with some seeing the nod as a way to curry favor with the U.S. president, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In 2024, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, a Republican from New York, threw Trump’s name into contention for the peace prize in recognition of the Abraham Accords.
Around the same time, Oleksandr Merezhko, a Ukrainian politician, nominated Trump, hoping it would push him to follow through on his campaign promise to end the Ukraine-Russia war, according to The Telegraph. But months later, he withdrew his nomination, claiming he no longer had “any kind of faith” in the president’s peace-making ability.
2025
This year, Trump has garnered at least four nominations.
Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, tapped him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Not since Ronald Reagan has an American president better represented the national resolve of peace through strength or the fundamental case for a world without war,” the lawmaker said in a statement.
A second lawmaker, Rep. Buddy Carter, a Georgia Republican, followed suit months later. In a letter to the Nobel Committee, he singled out Trump for his involvement in brokering a cease-fire between Israel and Iran, following their war.
In June, the government of Pakistan nominated Trump for his work in brokering another cease-fire — this one between Pakistan and India.
“President Trump’s leadership during the 2025 Pakistan India crisis manifestly showcases the continuation of his legacy of pragmatic diplomacy and effective peace-building,” the Pakistani government wrote in a post on X.
And, most recently, Netanyahu formally tapped Trump for the prize. He announced the nomination — which he said was for Trump’s effort to bring peace to the Middle East — during a White House visit in July, according to CNN.
In total, this would bring Trump’s nominations to at least 12.
However, it’s far from the most one person has ever garnered. Jane Addams, an American activist, received 91 nominations over a 15-year period before finally winning the prize in 1931.
