A man was arrested after being accused of targeting a registered sex offender and killing him, California officials said.

On Sept. 18, Fremont officers responded after getting reports of a “gravely injured” 71-year-old man, according to a news release by the police department.

When officers responded, they found the man with stab wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

During an investigation, officers found 29-year-old Varun Suresh standing outside the home, officials said.

Officers found the knife used during the attack and Suresh told officers he targeted the man because of his age and admitted to seeking out registered sex offenders as potential victims, officials said.

During the attack, Suresh chased the man into an unrelated home, officials said.

He was arrested and charged with murder, armed individual causing great bodily injury and residential burglary, officials said.

Fremont is about a 40-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
