Democrat Sharlett Mena is running for the state House of Representatives seat in Pierce County held by Steve Kirby.

“I believe that I have the skills that are necessary to advocate for my community, to bring them in, to elevate their voices and I think it’s one of us who should be there. That’s why I’m running,” she said. Mena added that the Legislature needs to make progress faster on several issues, such as ensuring affordable housing and reducing homelessness.

Mena, 30, is a Special Assistant to the Director of the state Department of Ecology. She is a former Deputy Director for federal and interstate affairs for Gov. Jay Inslee and managed immigration policy for U.S. Rep. Albio Sires, a New Jersey Democrat.

The daughter of immigrant farm workers, Mena is a first-generation American and the first in her family to graduate from college. In addition to housing, she wants to focus on workforce issues and preparing the next generation to lead.

“I’m dedicated to my neighbors, to the folks who are struggling. I hope I can bring real positive change at the very minimum by bringing those issues to the forefront,” said Mena, who lives in South Tacoma.

The 29th Legislative District includes South Tacoma, East Lakewood and Parkland.
