Early results show Strickland leading in 10th Congressional District race
Tuesday night’s election tallies showed Democrat Marilyn Strickland in the lead in the 10th Congressional District race, followed by Democrats Beth Doglio and Kristine Reeves.
Former Tacoma Mayor Strickland had 22,105 votes (21.4 percent), according to Tuesday night’s tally from the Secretary of State’s office. State Rep. Doglio of Olympia had 14,832 (14.4 percent). Next was former state Rep. Reeves of Federal Way with 13,605 (13.2 percent).
Two candidates advance to the general election in November, regardless of party.
“The campaign and the volunteers and our supporters are very excited about being in a very strong position ... ,” Strickland said by phone Tuesday night. “We know there are more results to come in, but it looks like we will move on to the general election.”
She said she did not imagine when she entered the race in December that the country would be facing a pandemic, economic crisis, and social unrest over racial inequality.
The early results, she said, seem to indicate that “voters have faith that I am the best candidate to address those things in Washington, D.C.”
Doglio too said she was happy with the results. Reached by phone, she said, “I’m really excited to be one of the top two vote getters tonight, but it’s really not about me. It’s about the people and groups that have embraced this campaign, even though I announced months after my opponents.”
She continued: “I’m looking forward to representing the South Sound in Congress.”
Reeves was still optimistic Tuesday night.
She said in a statement: “We are in the top two in two of the three counties in the district, and there are a lot of ballots yet to be counted. We may not know the final outcome of this primary for several days. I believe that the voters of the 10th Congressional District are eager for a candidate who has a proven track record of marrying progressive values with delivering real results, and I remain hopeful that as later counts come in, we will emerge victorious.”
The district includes most of Thurston and Pierce counties and part of Mason County.
The early results showed Republican candidate Rian Ingrim in fourth, with 10,967 votes (10.6 percent).
There were 19 people who filed in the race for U.S. Rep. Denny Heck’s open congressional seat.
103,316 votes have been counted.
As for turnout, Pierce County has an estimated 26,000 ballots and Thurston County has an estimated 27,500 ballots “on hand to be processed,” the Secretary of State’s office reported. An estimate for Mason County wasn’t listed. Also to be counted are any ballots still in the mail.
