5th Republican enters race for Heck’s 10th Congressional District seat
A fifth Republican has entered the race to succeed U.S. Rep. Denny Heck.
Donald Hewett on Thursday announced his candidacy to represent the 10th Congressional District, which covers nearly all of Thurston County, most of Pierce County and a portion of Mason County.
Hewett, 59, lives in Lacey and this is his first run for public office. Hewett is a former engineer at the Boeing Co. and Intel Corp. He is a caregiver for his family.
“I’m running because it’s actually time for me to serve and give back. I’ve had an awful lot of opportunity that people have given me to do things. I think there is a lot of common sense that needs to be brought back to our political system. We have a lot of professional politicians who are all following their own power and political gain, and I’m not really that way,” said Hewett, who described himself as a moderate Republican.
Heck announced late last year that he will not run for re-election, saying the discourse in Washington, D.C., had left him feeling discouraged.
Other Republicans in the race are Rian Ingrim, Dean Johnson, Nancy Dailey Slotnick, and Ryan Tate. The Democratic candidates are Joshua Collins, Beth Doglio, Phil Gardner, Kristine Reeves, and Marilyn Strickland.
Candidates must officially file to run the week of May 11-15. The primary election will be Aug. 4.
