Learn about the candidates for lieutenant governor in online forum Thursday

Washington voters will be able to view a Zoom forum featuring candidates for lieutenant governor on Thursday, July 9, at 5:30 p.m.

The Spokesman-Review newspaper of Spokane and the LWV Washington are sponsoring the event. The League of Women Voters of Tacoma-Pierce County will host the forum.

Among other duties, the lieutenant governor serves as president of the Washington State Senate and fills in as acting governor whenever the governor is unable to serve or leaves the state.

The current lieutenant governor is Cyrus Habib, a Democrat who began his term in January of 2017. Habib is not seeking reelection. He is quitting politics to become a Jesuit priest.

Eleven people have filed to run for the seat. The primary election to determine which two candidates will advance to the general election is Aug. 4.

TVW will live-stream the forum on its website as well as air it at a later date.

The forum also will be made available for later viewing on the LWV of Washington Facebook page and website, The Spokesman-Review website and the KHQ-TV website.

The lieutenant governor forum is the first of 10 forums and debates being planned.

Other forums include:

  • A primary forum for the position of secretary of state will take place July 16 at 7 p.m. KSPS will televise this forum and livestream the broadcast.

  • Debates for candidates vying for governor, attorney general, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and state treasurer will take place in the fall.
