Reeves endorses former Tacoma Mayor Strickland in 10th Congressional District race

Former Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland has picked up the endorsement of former state Rep. Kristine Reeves, whom she defeated in Washington’s 10th Congressional District primary.

“At this time we need leaders in Congress who understand, through first-hand lived experience, that our institutions of government are not working for all Americans and have disproportionately left Black, brown and low-income folks behind,” Reeves said in a statement.

“I strongly believe Marilyn Strickland is the candidate in this race who will stand up for those left behind, and I am proud to offer her my enthusiastic endorsement and support.”

Reeves, who placed third in the primary behind state Rep. Beth Doglio of Olympia and Strickland, conceded the race on Aug. 8. All three candidates are Democrats.

Strickland and Doglio are fighting for the seat now filled by Denny Heck, who is running for state Lieutenant Governor.

In a news release, Reeves was complimentary of Strickland’s leadership and care for her community, important assets of what she thinks is the key to backing a winning candidate.

“Marilyn has the right life experience and leadership skills to deliver real results for struggling families across this district. I ran for Congress as the daughter of a single mother. I grew up in and out of foster care, homeless at points in my youth, and a first generation college graduate. I have seen first-hand how progressive investments in our kids, working families and our economy can create opportunity that breaks institutional cycles,” Reeves wrote.

“As the first African American woman elected to the Washington state legislature in 18 years, and the only working mom with kids under the age of 5 at the time, I know the impact that different lived-experiences can have on the policy that comes out of our government.”

Early voting starts Oct. 16 for the Nov. 3.
